Size & cost alerts

A bucket that quietly triples in size is expensive twice over — once on the storage bill, and once in the time it takes to notice. Alerts close that gap: set a threshold, and BucketPilot emails you when the bucket passes it.

Alerts are a Business plan feature. They're set per bucket, and they go to workspace admins.

Open the bucket and go to the Alerts tab. Choose what to watch, enter a number, and click Add:

• •Size — in GB. Works with every storage provider.
• •Estimated cost — in dollars per month. Available where we can price the storage (Amazon S3). Providers we can't price say so rather than offering a threshold that would never fire.

The alert appears in the table below the form. Click its threshold to change it, or use the bin icon to remove it.

Add as many as you like. Escalating warnings — $20, then $40, then $80 — are the reason this exists.

With several set, you hear about the highest one you've passed, not all of them. A bucket at $45 tells you it's over $40; it doesn't also tell you it's over $20, which you already knew. Cross a higher threshold and you're told straight away.

The table still shows every passed threshold as Over, so the full picture is there when you look — the restraint is only in what gets emailed.

Once when a bucket goes over, then once a day while it stays over.

When a bucket drops back under a threshold, that alert resets itself. The next time it crosses, you're told immediately rather than a day later.

To stop the emails without deleting your thresholds, turn off Bucket thresholds in Settings → Notifications. That's per person, so it only affects you.

Two things are worth knowing so an alert reads the way you expect.

Alerts use your index. They read the same index the rest of the app does, which means a bucket that hasn't been indexed yet has nothing to measure — the Alerts tab tells you when that's the case. Index the bucket and alerts start working. Server drives have no Alerts tab at all: they're browsed live over SFTP rather than indexed, so there is no size for a threshold to compare against.

Cost is an estimate of storage. It's your indexed data at the region's per-GB rate. It does not include request, transfer or retrieval charges, so it won't match your provider's invoice exactly. It's built to catch a bucket growing out of hand, not to reconcile a bill.
